Top 10 Outdoor Activities

Our favorite local outdoor activities

Rock Climbing

Try world-class rock climbing at Smith Rock State Park, bouldering at Meadow Camp, or the awesome walls at Bend Rock Gym for those (who want a safe place to start out.)

Paddle Boarding

All ages can enjoy a paddle. Try Elk Lake or the calmer waters of the Deschutes River. Stand on Liquid, Stand Up Paddle Bend, or Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe can help you get started.

Sight-Seeing

Sometimes appreciating the scenery from afar isn’t enough. We want to get up close and personal with our backyard wonderland. Pilot Butte, the Old Mill District, Drake Park, Crater Lake and Tumalo Falls are just a few great destinations.

Parks

Picnics, festivals, movie nights, car shows, slackline, Frisbee…the list goes on! Our parks are a great place to spend the spring and summer enjoying friends, family, and that C.O. sunshine.

Caving

Who doesn’t want to discover the wonder of a lava tube? Visit the Redmond Caves or Lava River Cave at Newberry Crater National Monument and get a look at our underground.

Hiking

Trails can be found on the Deschutes River, in the Cascade Mountains, or even simply up Pilot Butte. Trail maps are available at Bend Metro Parks and Recreation and the U.S. Forest Service.

Golf

Whether you’re looking for a driving range, a putting course, eighteen holes, or a wide range of landscapes with views, the golf courses of Central Oregon have it.

Rock Hounding

You can only collect rocks on BLM land, but there’s plenty of that around. Obsidian is often found in the desert east of town—keep your eye out for shiny objects.

River Play

Floating the river on a hot day in Bend is pure bliss. The Deschutes River offers limitless fun. Besides floating you can enjoy fishing, swimming, kayaking or canoeing.

Camping

Within a one hour radius of Bend, plenty of great campgrounds can be found. Try the Metolius River, the Ochocos, Cascade Lakes Highway or Newberry Crater.
